Notes from the study of Text

My dear brothers and sisters, what a joy it is to be with you…I love joining with you in your homes or wherever you are to listen together to the messages of prophets, seers, and revelators, and other Church leaders.

How grateful we are for the technology that allows us to be connected as one great worldwide gathering of disciples of Jesus Christ.

During the past few months, a global pandemic, raging wildfires, and other natural disasters have turned our world upside down. I grieve with each of you who has lost a loved one during this time. And I pray for all who are currently suffering.

Increased gospel study in many homes is resulting in stronger testimonies and family relationships.

We are here on earth to be tested, to see if we will choose to follow Jesus Christ, to repent regularly, to learn, and to progress.

Through it all, our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, love us! They care for us! They and Their holy angels are watching over us.1 I know that is true.

I invite you to ponder a promise the Lord made. He declared that “whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning … and the wiles of the devil, and lead the [disciple] of Christ in a strait and narrow course.” Scripture from Helaman 3:29

Important principles

We are Joyful. Men are that they might have Joy. Scripture from 2 Nephi 2:25. All men might choose to be happy. And what the prophet is saying in the first snippet is that he is feeling joy being with the viewers and attendees to listen to the words of “prophets, seers, and revelators” and “other church leaders”.

We are grateful. Gratitude is a key to being happy. There are no happy ungrateful people. We are to find ways to act being grateful.

We greave with those who mourn. “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15).

Work. As in the work of the Lord. The work of the Lord goes forward in teaching the world to become more like him and help aid those who are in need. Some physical indications of this are Church Buildings breaking ground, missionaries teaching people, and 850 projects aiding those in need because of the pandemic.

Increased gospel study results in stronger testimonies and family relationships. He gave an example of a mother.

Progress. Why are we here on earth? We are to progress. The best way to progress is to stay on the covenant path.

Love of the Lord This is one I missed from the oral presentation. Because of course our Father and Christ love us. Section 84:88 teaches an important principle.

88 ”And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.”

We are here to be tested and see if we do the work of the Lord and change ourselves but his spirit, his angels, and the Lord himself will be with us.

We are invited to ponder this promise. Helaman 3:29 Laying hold of the word of God will lead Christ’s disciples in a strait and narrow course.

Summary

I expected this to be a short talk with one, maybe two, principles of the gospel. But even the short introductory talk covers many topics and invites us to “lay hold” of even more gospel in the coming talks.
